Users Discontinuing Slimming Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing such medications must be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural support.
