Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry
The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in Perth.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.
"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.
"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."
Previous Setbacks
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.
Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.
Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.
Alternative Arrangements
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.
All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.
Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
