Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty
The United States central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
